Instagram, Facebook, and Camera Oh My!

We all know and love Facebook with its features and functionality, but most importantly it has become the social media for the people. Facebook has connected the world like no other network. Facebook has over 880 million users and that number continues to grow.

How does a new comer like Instagram fit into the mix?

I]f you are not one of the 80 million users you should consider. Instagram has been described as the “visual Twitter”. In an article published by the Huffington Post, they described the three best features of Instagram and why you should give it a try: 1) It inspires the creative photographer in all of us, 2) it allows us to view the world through the lens of our friends, 3) it is a virtual scrapbook of all our travels and adventures.

Instagram and Facebook?

Instagram was recently purchased by Facebook for 1 billion, an astonishing number considering this fledgling company of tightknit engineers has only 11 employees. Numbers aside, a surprising battle has risen between Instagram and the recently released Facebook app called Camera. Does this make any sense at all for Facebook to buy Instagram for 1 billion and then to release essentially the same app to compete against the app they just bought? Who knows, perhaps there is some method behind the madness of Zuckerberg.

What is Camera?

Camera is essentially a clone of instagram, with a few minor changes. Tech blog Gizmodo published an article comparing the two apps side by side. The beauty of Instagram is the simplicity of design and ease of sharing photos. Facebook’s Camera app has the same basic design, but is not as easy to navigate. It is also expected for the Camera app 1.0 to go through many changes, no surprise for a Facebook app.

What does this mean for Instagram?

Instagram has continued to grow at an incredible rate and makes the 1 billion dollar price tag look less outrageous. Although Facebook founder and now owner of Instagram, has said Instagram will be left alone to continue its own thing, what he didn’t discuss is how Facebook is copying all that is good in the Instagram app to add to Camera.

In the end, the devoted fans of Instagram, commonly referred to as Igers, hope that the purchase won’t affect their beloved app. The rest of the 800 million facebook users will have to choose what app they like better until both apps become so similar they eventually merge into one app.

Do you think all the photos, hipsters, and swaggers will ever convert to Camera?

No To The Quo

  • The program itself only works on smartphones, so if you don't have an Android phone or Apple iPhone, you're out of luck. You can find the app in the respective app store, or you can go to instagram.com to learn more.
